Thinking of starting DE or HE a few questions

Postby Carl Brown on Wed Nov 11, 2009 1:38 pm

I'm thinking of building an Elric of Melnibone inspired WFB army based on DE or HE but have a few questions.

1. What differences are there between HE and DE magic?

2. How many Dragons (or dragons proxied for other beasties) can I squeeze into a 2k build in each army?

Judging by what I've seen of Ben's army builds I'm guessing the DE army has the most monsters available but I hear you get more choice of dragon 'flavours' in the HE army.

Any pros and cons for HE vs DE with regards how they perform on the tabletop at 2K?

I've not played WFB since 5th/6th ish so I'm a bit out of the loop with regards the various builds and army strengths and weaknesses.

Cheers

DE magic is a lot more blasty and they can also get the more blasty lore's from the rule book

I think you can get 3 in a 2K HE army

Judging by what I've seen of Ben's army builds

I've been told that by someone else today - I really like the sound of the rule about killing your own guys for power - a good parallel for Elric and his soul-sucking sword.

I've been told two by someone else - dragon prince and dragon mage - not quite enough for me.

LOL

Unfortunately I think I'm leaning into a monster heavy DE force - it fits the kind of theme I'm angling for.

People wouldn't hate me anyway - I wouldn't be able to play them a fraction like what Ben can do with them.

You'll only get 2 dragons on a HE 2K or 2250 army mate, as each dragon choice also swallows an additional hero slot. and as they are only mounts for lords or the dragon mage your option is simply Lord on Star Dragon ( bout the only thing it might fear is a Bloodthirster, but then that works out quite funny when the thirster has flaming attacks ) and a dragon mage, which is pretty limited - you then lose your HE magic defense bonuses. Which leads me neatly onto HE magic - DEFENSIVE is in my opinion the only way to play it , I used to have Lord on a Star Dragon and 2 level 2 Mages at least one of them has to use High Magic to be worth having.

for reference dragon princes are cavalry.

If you want agressive go DE , well thats my take, and i'm quite happy to expand on HE if your around the club on monday, and everyone else feel free to disagree.

if i were you i would read both army books before making a decision. both armies have there pros and cons (dark elves more pros).
Dark elves are more common as there one of the more powerful armies out there. if your going for something differant i would go for high elves.
as for proxying, anything goes aslong as its on the right base size.

dark elves could proxy dragons for hydras?

2 rare choices.... plus then any characters on dragons... not got the book to hand.

I think I'm going to wait for the rumoured release of 8th edition before jumping in on WFB again.

Still undecided about the HE/DE thing but DE does sound more fun to me (aggressive).
